Torchwood: First Two Teasers + Press Release
TorchwoodThe BBC has released a press release and two teasers of Torchwood: Miracle Day. Enjoy!

Thursday 14 July at 9.00-10.00pm on BBC ONE

One day, nobody dies. All across the world, nobody dies. And then the next day, and the next, and the next, people keep ageing – they get hurt and sick, but they never die. The result: a population boom, overnight.

With all the extra people, resources are finite. It’s said that in four month’s time, the human race will cease to be viable. But this can’t be a natural event – someone’s got to be behind it. It’s a race against time as CIA agent Rex Matheson investigates a global conspiracy. The answers lie within an old, secret British institute. As Rex keeps asking: “What is Torchwood?”, he’s drawn into a world of adventure, and a threat to change what it means to be human … for ever.

In the launch episode of Torchwood: Miracle Day, Agent Rex Matheson is impaled in a car crash and miraculously survives, while his analyst, Esther Drummond, sets out to discover what Torchwood is. Far away, in Wales, Gwen Cooper lives in hiding with her husband Rhys and daughter Anwen – she’s the last surviving Torchwood member and is determined to stay hidden. In Kentucky, convicted murderer Oswald Danes survives his own execution. And when Esther meets the mysterious Captain Jack Harkness, assassins are activated to kill them all…

 Touchwood Season 4!
TorchwoodThe Doctor Who spin-off show has been given the green light after the BBC secured US funding.

John Barrowman and Eve Myles are to return for a fourth series of the Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood, after the BBC securing funding from the US cable network Starz Entertainment.

Barrowman, as Captain Jack Harkness, and Myles, as Gwen Cooper, will be working along with new cast members on the new 10-part series with a team of writers led by Torchwood's creator, Russell T Davies.

The new series will be a three-way co-production between BBC Wales, which made the previous series, Starz and the corporation's commercial arm, BBC Worldwide, which distributes the show.

Torchwood has previously been shot on location in and around BBC Wales's Cardiff base. The new series will feature location filming in the US and around the world and is being made by BBC Worldwide Productions.

The first series of the sci-fi drama drama was broadcast on BBC3 in late 2006, with the second run shifting to BBC2 when it was transmitted in early 2008. The third series aired on BBC1 in July last year as a five-part mini-series, Children of Earth, stripped across consecutive nights.

Starz is the US broadcaster behind Spartacus: Blood and Sand, the graphic retelling of the Roman slave revolt story that has just started airing in the UK on Bravo.

The new Torchwood series will be executive-produced by Davies and the Los Angeles-based BBC Worldwide Productions executives Jane Tranter and Julie Gardner.

Torchwood was commissioned by BBC1's controller, Jay Hunt; Ben Stephenson, controller of BBC drama; and Chris Albrecht, Starz president and chief executive.

Fox pulls out of Torchwood US remake
TorchwoodPlan to make a US version of the Doctor who spin-off Torchwood have been put on ice after TV network Fox pulled out.

In a statement, BBC Worldwide said both companies had "mutually agreed not to progress together with a 13-episode serialized Torchwood format". However, the BBC said discussions with other networks were continuing and plans to get the show made for US audiences were still in the pipeline.
The sci-fi drama, starring John Barrowman, has been a hit in the UK.

The show, which follows a group of secret agents battling human and alien enemies, began life on BBC Three in 2006.

It proved so popular that it was moved to BBC Two - and attracted another ratings boost when a third series was shown on BBC One last year.

However, the last move resulted in the series being cut from 13 episodes to five - allowing a single continuing story to be stripped across a week of programmes.

At the time, Barrowman criticised the decision, saying he felt like the show was "being punished".
BBC Worldwide is the commercial arm of the BBC.

Fourth series of Torchwood is in the works.
TorchwoodRussell T. Davies has confirmed that a fourth series of Torchwood is in the works, and that he is hoping to get started on the new series in January 2010.

Davies said: "We've got great ideas for the show. I think there's a further lease on life for many years to come, but certainly for a fourth series. I could write you scene one of series four right now. I know exactly how to pick it up."

"I've got a shape in mind, and I've got stories. I know where you'd find Gwen and Rhys, and their baby, and Jack, and I know how you'd go forward with a new form of Torchwood."

Torchwood: Children Of Earth ended its run on BBC One with a respectable 5.81 million viewers in July this year.

 BBC's Torchwood Has U.S. Roots
TorchwoodJulie Gardner, executive producer of the BBC series Torchwood and head of drama development for BBC Wales, told SCI FI Wire that the series grew out of a fascination with American science fiction TV shows, particularly those on the air in the 1990s.

Gardner and Russell T. Davies, the lead writer of both Torchwood and Doctor Who, met during a time of such shows as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Smallville and Battlestar Galactica, Gardner said in an interview. "And Russell and I were watching all of those shows," she recalled. "And every week we would talk about those shows with so much kind of love and kind of detail. And we would talk about why we weren't doing those kinds of shows in Britain."

In that spirit, Gardner and Davies developed a script for a science fiction series called Excalibur, which centered on a team of paranormal investigators. "It was a kind of [an] urban-landscape, present-day series," Gardner said. "And the scene that Russell in his two-page pitch described was the scene where there was this sexy group of investigators in an alleyway at night, it's raining, a corpse is on the ground, and one of them brings out a glove and is able to bring the corpse back to life, which is, of course, the central first scene in Episode 1 of what became Torchwood."

The project was put on hold when Davies was tapped to oversee the new incarnation of Doctor Who, but following the success of that revival, he and Gardner returned to their idea with a new twist that tied into the Doctor Who universe.

"We had a great crew working on Doctor Who, and we thought it would be a great thing to kind of keep that team together, but stretch their creative muscles in a different direction," Gardner said. "To do something very different. And Torchwood was born out of the Excalibur idea, because we loved working with John Barrowman on the first season of Doctor Who. His character of Captain Jack had really taken hold of people's imagination. And we knew that the public was really responding to that character. So it made a huge amount of sense to take the Captain Jack figure and put him into the show that eventually became Torchwood."

Gardner added that while Doctor Who has a traditionally British feel to it, Torchwood's American influences are evident in the premise. "I guess you could describe it as more American in terms of it's slightly precinct-based," she said. "It's the story of the week every week. It's a sci-fi show that is rooted in the Earth. It's not a sci-fi show [like] Doctor Who [that] travels in galaxies and time and space. It's a kind of X-Files in some [sense], in terms of the stories of the week and how rooted that is."

Torchwood will have its premiere in the United States on Sept. 8 at 9 p.m. on BBC America. The first season will be available on DVD on Jan. 8, 2008. â??Cindy White
